Audio Codecs

Mp3 - enough said, this is the most popular audio format.

It was written in the mid 80's by Fraunhofer IIS-A but did not catch on until 1997 when the home computer became powerful enough to play them. It was fine tuned with the a cappela version of Toms Diner by Susan Vega.

Wma - this is a very popular format, but not as popular as mp3.

this codec was developed by Microsoft

DivX Audio ;-) this is not an official format. it was hacked from DivX 3.11

this codec is probably the the highest compression available (next to ogg) i encoded a song at 20 Kbps in 22 kHz stereo that sounded ok. This weeks download is available in DivX Audio :-) so you can listen to it. there is no official DivX Audio ;-) Website as far as i know.

Mp3Pro - Mp3 version 2

This format is the second version of the mp3 codec. It was made by a joint venture of Coding Technologies and Fraunhofer IIS-A a demo encoder/player is available at http://www.mp3prozone.com/ made by Thomson Multimedia..
